Chiropractic is a profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.  Chiropractic care is used most often to conservatively care for neuromusculoskeletal conditions, typically including: back pain, neck pain, headache, pain in the joints of the: arms, legs, and jaw.  Doctors of Chiropractic practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis, prognosis, care and patient education.  Chiropractors use specific adjusting techniques, physiotherapy modalities, rehabilitative exercises, and nutritional, dietary and lifestyle advice to help the patient regain, maintain or maximize one's health.

The most common procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as a “chiropractic adjustment.”  An adjustment can be performed on the joints of the spine or extremities.  The type of adjustment technique that is used depends on the chiropractor and the patient's needs.  The purpose of adjusting is to restore joint mobility and range of motion.

Loss of joint motion is typically a result of an injury, caused by a traumatic event, (car accident or lifting a heavy object), or repetitive stress, (sitting at your desk for a long time or performing the same act over and over). These injuries cause tissue changes that lead to inflammation, pain and decreased function.  Joints that remain restricted will lead to degenerative changes, soft tissue imbalances, movement dysfunction and pain.  Adjusting restores mobility of the joints and tissues, decreasing stress and tension, allowing tissues to heal and slow joint degeneration.

Restoring joint motion also leads to many non- pain, non-symptom based benefits, (see Benefits of Care). Many patients seek chiropractic care to improve & optimize their overall health.
